I am always missing the answer to this question. Maybe this is something for the FAQ?

Virtually forever. You can inherit copyright. I have heard about an artificial limit of 150 years but for me thats about the same as "forever".

In the Netherlands the copyrights lasts for seventy years after the death of the author, generally speaking.

so if a work gets restricted in your lifetime ... better dont wait for it to become available

The only way to get it released in your lifetime is to lobby for changes in copyright legislation... if you just wait, you will be dead, and probably your grandchildren as well.
